Dr. Maas's Bio

Dr. Corey S. Maas is an internationally renowned facial plastic surgeon, board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He completed his Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, after extensive training at prestigious medical institutions. Dr. Maas served as the Chief of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UCSF for over 11 years before founding The Maas Clinic for Aesthetic and Facial Plastic Surgery and The Research Center at The Maas Clinic in 2001. He is also the Medical Director of The Appearance Care Center, a state-of-the-art medical day spa equipped with the latest technology and skilled nursing staff. His successful clinics in the scenic Pacific Heights district of San Francisco and Lake Tahoe cater to patients seeking natural and beautiful results.

A distinguished leader in his field, Dr. Maas served as the President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2021 and the President of the California Society of Facial Plastic Surgery in 2020. He is currently a board member of both organizations. Dr. Maas has received numerous awards for his contributions to facial plastic surgery, including the Readers’ Choice Award for Best Cosmetic Surgeon from the SF Examiner and SF Weekly, as well as the Sir Harold Delf Gillies Award from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

He is a past editor of the San Francisco Marin Medicine Journal and has been featured in various media outlets, including San Francisco Medicine, Cosmetic Surgery Times, Vogue, and Allure. A published author, Dr. Maas has written over 150 articles, contributed to numerous book chapters, and participated as a principal investor in more than 40 clinical trials that have advanced his specialty. He views facial plastic surgery as both a science and an art, dedicating time to enhance his artistic skills through painting, drawing, and playing the guitar. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Dr. Maas is a pilot and athlete, enjoying skiing, hiking, biking, and golfing with his wife and two sons whenever possible.

Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program

Dr. Maas is a Fellowship Director for the Fellowship Program under the auspices of the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Fellowship directors are recognized authorities in the teaching and practice of facial plastic surgery. The Fellowship Program is internationally known as the finest post-graduate program for training and educating facial plastic surgeons. Since 1969, the program has helped 1,300+ specialized experts become leaders in plastic surgery, advancing patient care, refining surgical techniques, and developing and educating others about new procedures.

The Fellowship Program Objectives

Provide an outstanding academic opportunity for the acquisition of specialized knowledge and skills in facial plastic surgery;
Develop trained specialists who will contribute to the ongoing development of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery;
Foster development of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery educators, especially in residency programs and
Encourage the development of new skills and knowledge in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery through basic research and clinical trials.

All fellows must have completed a residency program in otolaryngology or plastic surgery, which the Accreditation Council approves for Graduate Medical Education, or be board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology or Plastic Surgery.

A Word from Dr. Maas

"There is a long, time-honored tradition in medicine of sharing your knowledge with the next generation. After finishing medical school and a medical internship, there are another four to seven years of general post-surgery internship training. Still, there is only so much you can learn from books and articles about medicine, especially regarding surgery. The importance of hand-eye coordination and mechanical-cerebral coordination in surgery cannot be overstated.

I am very proud to have taught for 12 years at UCSF, sharing my knowledge with residents and medical students, and I have worked with fellows for the past 23 years. With all my fellows, outstanding academic credentials are a given. My fellows are fully credentialed at the hospital and surgery centers we use and are either plastic surgery trained or head and neck surgery trained after their medical internship.

They all come to me specifically to learn how to perform facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and research in the field, which is an integral part of advancing our understanding and the science behind what we do. I hope all my fellows become fellowship directors in the future and join me in sharing their knowledge with the next generation. Each fellow brings something new to the practice. Their curiosity, ideas, and questions all challenge me and help me refine my decision-making, helping me become a better surgeon.

As part of their training, my fellows assist in the pre and post-operative care of our patients and assist me in surgery. I must emphasize that they don’t perform the surgery; they only assist as a surgical technician would, learning by watching and assisting me. Every year, I ask my fellows to write a little bio of themselves, talking about where they came from, their academic background, how they knew they wanted to be a doctor, and why they chose to pursue facial plastic surgery, saving a precious snapshot of their goals for posterity."
